There was a time
When there was barely enough food to go around
And you had to fight for it
Today we throw away the tomatoes with lumps
And half-eaten rotisserie chickens
Because where else would you put it?
In the hands of your neighbor?
You can’t share something ugly like that
In the hands of the homeless around the corner?
You don’t know them and they might come back asking for more
Why do we give food distribution rights to MasterCard and Visa
Who don’t care how much food goes in the dump
Who are happy to watch
Who are happy to watch us struggle to have more than the rest
Even to the extent that some of us sleep on the street,
And see the wealthy sitting behind windows
Still fighting to have more
While the ecosystem collapses
